The Dunfey’s and The Smith’s.

So, my latest tv obsession is Modern Family. I had successfully avoided watching Modern Family until September when it showed up on USA Network…also the home of my all-time tv obsession, NCIS. For some reason, I thought Modern Family was going to be rude, crude and socially unacceptable.

Quite the contrary.

I think it is hilarious and, so far, I have not been offended in the least. In fact today, while catching up on a few DVR’d episodes, I actually got weepy. The weepiness may, or may not, speak more to my current state of hormonalness, but that’s neither here nor there. The fact is, I was jealous of a tv family. For the record, I never got teary whilst watching Leave it to Beaver or Happy Days. Let’s face it. The Cleaver’s and The Cunningham’s were so perfect that it was difficult to take them seriously. At least for me to take them seriously.

The Dunfey’s, on the other hand, hit a little too close to home.

I won’t go into naming names and assigning personalities. I will just skip to the weepy part. Claire and Phil Dunfey, the lead characters in the show, reconnected by phone after each being out with one of their children and it all just went wrong from the beginning. But by the end of the day, and of the episode, they both realized how lucky they were and how they couldn’t wait to reconnect and talk about their days.

Cue the weeping.

I haven’t been very much about the connecting lately. In fact, I’ve been pretty winter bear-like. Hibernating, if you didn’t get that analogy. Sure…I’m here. I’m present. But I’ve been really internalizing everything and not so much aware of what is going on with everyone else. Or, as I like to say and bff, Lori keeps nay-saying, I’ve been feeling pretty apathetic.

But that was yesterday. Today is a new day. Thanks to Modern Family. I want what the Dunfey’s have. Connection. *I’ve already got the sarcastic and arguing kids and the crazy family members*

Love you guys. And especially, those crazy family members of ours.

  3. How did I miss this blog? Anyway, I love Modern Family, and I laugh out loud at every episode — and also get weepy. But mostly I laugh. I think we can all relate to at least one member of that family – I love Gloria and her mispronunciations!
